SmB Cafe and BBQ June 2019
Thursday the 13th
Our yearly Science meets Business BBQ, where scientists, students and business professionals can mix, meet and mingle to broaden their network, look for (people to fill) positions, learn and/or just to have fun and catch-up. For sure that we will be celebrating another year of science meeting business. We are looking forward to welcoming you all!
PROGRAMME
Financing and entrepreneurship after Biology
SPEAKER: Dwayne van der Klugt
Dwayne is an alumnus of Science Based Business and Biology and is now active as a start-up and scale-up consultant at KplusV. He will go into what he does at KplusV and share some of his cases to illustrate not only what KplusV does, but what some of the financing challenges are in science start- and scale-ups.
For more info on KplusV, check out the link story and link below.
My life after SBB and Chemistry
SPEAKER: Jia Wang
Chemistry and Science Based Business alumnus Jia Wang will walk through his years after SBB and take us along the ride of what business and science combined can do. Who says you can't go into academia after a business minor and then work your way from science to a good science and business hybrid at one of the world's largest companies?
Trading energy after Astronomy
SPEAKER: Joris Voorn
Joris Voorn proves that Science Based Business is not only relevant for the Life Science, Biology or Pharmaceutical students. As an Astronomy student, Joris finished his masters and SBB minor in 2014 and is now trading energy at Northpool. What is that, you ask? Joris will tell you all about it at the Cafe.
Read more about Northpool below.
My life after SBB and BioPharmaceutical Sciences
SPEAKER: Joël de Jager
Joël de Jager is not only a Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Science Based Business alumnus, but is also 'one of our own', having volunteered at Science meets Business between 2012 and 2014! Just like Jia Wang, Joël will walk us through how he experienced his years after SBB and SmB and how both helped him in his career path. 'So what is the added value of the SBB and SmB knowledge and network?'

Biopartner Center Leiden
CONTRIBUTOR CAFE & BBQ
Biopartner Center Leiden has been our host since the very beginning of Science meets Business. They make sure we have a colourful, laid back location in the heart of the Leiden Bio Science Park and are so kind as to let us use their facilities.
About Biopartner: "BioPartner Center Leiden is the incubator organization of the Leiden Bio Science Park and is a foundation that offers accommodation to (re)starting life sciences companies. We offer flexible offices and laboratory facilities for companies that carry out research specifically aimed at the development of medicines and vaccines."

Science Based Business
MAIN CONTRIBUTOR BBQ
Science meets Business is all about uniting scientists and business professionals to create science entrepreneurship magic. The Science Based Business track at Leiden University does this in the form of education and therefore SmB and SBB are very valuable to each other. Once a year, we aim to bring together as many SBB-alumni, SBB-students and SmB enthusiasts as possible together to mingle, match, share experiences and explore opportunities.
About SBB: "SBB fuses business scholarship with technology and industry engagement. Our programs forge strong relationships to other groups within the Faculty of Science and LUMC, and center on major societal needs."

KplusV
SPONSOR BBQ
About KplusV: "Our company, founded in 1984, is the Dutch market leader in alternative finance and support to young innovative companies at achieving their goals. We advise over 150 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on a yearly basis. As such, we are familiar with the challenges they face and know what they need. To fully understand the impact of their challenges, we also conduct research. In collaboration with public and private parties we analyse economic systems, market potential and availability of alternative finance on a local, regional, national and European level. We are known for our in-depth knowledge of innovation processes, product development, business development, strategy and corporate finance."

Northpool
SPONSOR BBQ
About Northpool: "Energy is traded on markets, similarly to the way stocks are. Except that it's a trade of physical products. Supply and demand must be balanced at all times. A power shortage creates problems. Northpool trades – within and across borders – to deliver power where it is most needed."

Centrient Pharmaceuticals
SPONSOR BBQ
"Centrient Pharmaceuticals is the leading manufacturer of beta-lactam antibiotics, and a provider of next generation statins and anti-fungals. Founded 150 years ago as the ‘Nederlandsche Gist- en Spiritusfabriek’, the company was known as Gist Brocades and more recently DSM Sinochem Pharmaceuticals. Headquartered in Rotterdam (Netherlands), Centrient Pharmaceuticals has production facilities and sales offices in China, India, the Netherlands, Spain, Egypt, the United States and Mexico."

The municipality of Leiden
MAIN CONTRIBUTOR CAFE
The municipality of Leiden makes sure our volunteers can keep on organizing the Science meets Business events. Their subsidy supports our cafe and non-commercial activities that focus on bringing Leiden's science, business and entrepreneurship together.

Let us know if you'll be there!
Attendance to Science meets Business events is free of charge. However, in order to know how many seats, drinks and food we should provide, we would like to know how many people to expect. This is why we kindly request you register for the events if you are joining, and please let us know if you will no longer be able to attend (no hard feelings). See you soon!
