Science meets Werfpop
Sunday July 8th
Just like we are, Werfpop is completely run by volunteers and their events are free for attendees. Next to the fact that that is awesome and we support that 100%, we got the chance to show that science is awesome as well, one of the strong aspects of Leiden that is sometimes forgotten by those outside of the Bio Science Park. So, since Werfpop is already at the right side of the station, why not do science?!
And who knows, maybe we'll create a spark for future science entrepreneurs!
Programme
Freezing Physics
13:00 - 15:00 | Stichting RINO
In this interactive show, liquid nitrogen (with a temperature of 196 degrees Celcius below zero) will be used to show what interesting phenomena occur at very low temperatures.
Come and watch what happens when you freeze a tomato or what a nitrogen fountain looks like.
And as a bonus: they will make ICE CREAM!
Drawing with bacteria
13:00 - 16:00 | iGEM Leiden
Did you know you can use bacteria to make art? This year you can try this at Werfpop! Come by the Science Tent to make your own bacteria drawing with iGEM Leiden.
They can also tell you everything about how they are planning on using to bacteria to take on one of the biggest medical challenges today: antibiotics resistance.
Sounds of Space
13:00 - 16:30 | Sound, Space & Interaction
The biggest part of the radiation from the galaxy we can't see with our bare eyes. We CAN however translate this radiation to to sound.
Curious? Come and experience how our invisible, spooky universe sounds.
Made by Media Technology MSc student Lisa Pothoven, in the track Sound, Space & Interaction by Edwin van der Heide.
Sound, Space & Swarm
15:00 - 16:30 | Sound, Space & Interaction
The quality of a musical piece depends heavily on how tempo, rhythm and melodic and harmonic materials are arranged into a composition. A good composition can be seen as the product of sensitive layering and arranging, or placing the right sound at the right position in a compositional space.
Today, you and others will experience the task of arranging by making use of a smartphone and your location in physical space. Only by allocating in the right way, acting as an intelligent swarm, you can create nice and interesting compositions.
Made by Media Technology MSc students Pieter Pierrot & Matthias König, in the track Sound, Space & Interaction by Edwin van der Heide.
AI Hit Maker
13:00 - 16:30 | AI Lab Den Haag
Are you the next music sensation? Come to the Science Tent to create your own rock hit using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
AI Lab Den Haag is a community for people interested in AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Data Science. They host presentation, workshops, hackathons and co-working sessions.
Are you the next Top Model?
13:00 - 16:30 | Fashion Scout (start-up)
We all know that Facebook and Google can recognise us in pictures. We can use AI to make cars recognise street signs and your camera to detect smiles. Why not use this technology to detect top models?
Will you pass the test?
This initiative has been started by Kimberley Aarts originating from her master in ICT in Business. She is now collaborating with AI Lab.
Astronomy on Tap meets Werfpop!
16:30 - 18:00 | Astronomy on Tap
Curious about Astronomy? Like beer? You will love this block!
Astronomy organises games, talks and quizzes by professional astronomers in the informal setting of a local bar. This time: De Proeftuin at Werfpop!
We will have two sessions of a talk plus QUIZ and grab the chance to win NASA, ESA and ESO gadgets and free beer!
Start session 1: 16:45
Start session 2: 17:30
