Sustainable Biotechnology

Peter Rowe (CEO Deepbranch Technology)

Our technology takes carbon dioxide directly from industrial emissions and transforms it into single cell protein. This nutritious protein source acts as a more sustainable alternative to soy or fishmeal, the conventional protein sources for livestock and aquaculture feed.

Novel Antibiotics

Leonie de Best (CBO Madame Therapeutics)

Madam Therapeutics, in collaboration with the LUMC and AMC, is developing antibiotics with a new mechanism of action to contribute to the increasing issue of antimicrobial resistance to traditional antibiotics. The lead compound SAAP-148 is currently being developed for the treatment of for example wound infections and is nearing the end of the pre-clinical fase. The first clinical study is expected to kick-off end of 2019. Madam would in the near future also like to develop other SAAPs for (semi-) systemic infections.

Dirty Money

Andreas Voss (prof. of Infection Prevention)

The Ig Nobel Prize is the ‘little sister’ of the genuine and prestigious Nobel prizes that will be announced in early October. The Ig Nobel goes to research that first makes you laugh, and then makes you think. Voss investigated how pathogenic bacteria survived on seven different banknotes. E. coli, which commonly occurs in faeces, was found to flourish on euro notes and Romanian leu banknotes, but not on the Indian rupee. Dollar bills, on the other hand, were an ideal breeding ground for MRSA, the dreaded ‘hospital bug’.
